This predictability allows students to plan their day more efficiently. Sahil Mehta, a student at Jamia Millia Islamia, explains, “With the Metro, I know exactly when I’ll reach my destination. With buses, it’s always a gamble.”

Safety First: A Secure Choice for Young Women

Safety is a top priority for Gen-Z, especially for young women navigating Delhi’s urban landscape. While DTC buses have made efforts to enhance safety with marshals and CCTV cameras, the perception of security remains a concern. In contrast, the Delhi Metro is widely regarded as safer.

With CCTV surveillance, well-lit stations, and security personnel at every corner, the Metro offers a sense of security that’s hard to match. According to a survey conducted at Miranda House College, over 75% of female students said they feel safer commuting by Metro compared to buses. Ananya Verma, a student from Lady Shri Ram College, shares, “I feel more secure in the Metro, especially during late evenings. There’s a sense of order and safety that buses don’t provide.”

The availability of women-only coaches is another major factor driving this preference. It offers a comfortable and harassment-free space, reflecting the Metro’s commitment to catering to the needs of female passengers.

Digital Integration: The Cashless Appeal

Gen-Z is a digital-native generation, accustomed to cashless transactions and seamless connectivity. This affinity for digital solutions is another reason they favor the Delhi Metro. With the option to recharge smart cards online, use mobile payment apps like Paytm, and even access real-time updates through the official DMRC app, the Metro aligns perfectly with Gen-Z’s tech-savvy lifestyle.

In contrast, DTC buses primarily rely on cash transactions, which many young people find outdated. “I don’t even remember the last time I carried cash. Using my phone to recharge my Metro card is so convenient,” says, a third-year student of Amity University.

The Metro’s digital integration goes beyond payments. Free Wi-Fi at select stations and mobile network connectivity throughout most routes allow students to stay connected, whether they’re completing assignments, scrolling through social media, or simply streaming music. This digital ecosystem resonates strongly with Gen-Z, for whom staying connected is non-negotiable.

The Metro’s clean and well-maintained environment also adds to its appeal. In a generation increasingly conscious about aesthetics and hygiene, the air-conditioned, polished interiors of the Metro are far more inviting than the often crowded and poorly maintained DTC buses.

Connectivity and Speed: Time is Money

The Delhi Metro’s extensive network is another game-changer. Connecting almost every educational hub—from North Campus to South Campus, from Noida to Dwarka—the Metro ensures that students can travel seamlessly across the city. This level of connectivity is a significant advantage for college-goers who frequently travel between campuses, internships, and social events.

In contrast, while DTC buses do cover a vast area, they suffer from issues like route changes, irregular timings, and frequent traffic delays. For a generation that values time as a precious commodity, the Metro’s speed and punctuality are decisive factors.

“I spend about ₹30 more per day on the Metro compared to the bus, but it’s worth it. The time and energy I save are priceless,” explains, a student at Jamia Millia Islamia. This willingness to pay a little extra reflects a shift in priorities—where comfort and efficiency are valued over cost.

The growing preference for the Metro poses a challenge for the Delhi Transport Corporation. If it hopes to regain the trust and loyalty of young commuters, it needs to modernize its services. This could include introducing digital payment options, improving bus frequency and punctuality, enhancing safety measures, and upgrading the overall comfort of its fleet.

Investing in electric buses could also align DTC with the eco-conscious values of Gen-Z, making it a more appealing option. However, these changes require significant investment and policy support.
