The Buddhist Circuit: Sarnath, Kushinagar and Shravasti With Real Timings and Itinerary Tips

Most people building this circuit assume Bodh Gaya in Bihar is the logical starting point. It is the most important site in Buddhism, the place of the Enlightenment, but it is not the most logical entry into the UP leg of the circuit. If you are flying in, Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport is the better hub. It puts you 10 kilometres from Sarnath on day one, and from Varanasi you can move northeast toward Kushinagar and then double back west toward Shravasti without retracing the same road twice.
Bodh Gaya works as either a standalone Bihar extension before the UP circuit, or as a closing stop if you cross back into Bihar after Shravasti. The train from Varanasi to Gaya takes roughly three to four hours. Do not try to fold Bodh Gaya into a single-day Varanasi-Sarnath itinerary. That is how pilgrims end up rushing the Mahabodhi Temple at dusk with no time to sit.Sarnath is where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after Enlightenment. The Dhamek Stupa, which marks the exact spot of that first teaching, dates to around 500 CE in its current form, though the site itself is far older. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains the site and the adjacent museum.

• The ASI site (Dhamek Stupa and ruins) opens at 9 AM and closes at 5 PM. Entry is Rs 40 for Indian nationals, Rs 600 for foreign nationals.
• The Sarnath Museum, one of the finest Buddhist museums in the country, housing the original Ashoka Lion Capital, opens at 10 AM and closes at 5 PM. It is closed on Fridays.
• The Mulagandhakuti Vihara, a modern temple built by the Maha Bodhi Society, opens at 6 AM and closes at 12 noon, then reopens from 2 PM to 7 PM.

The single most common mistake: arriving at 7 AM expecting everything to be open. The stupa grounds are locked. The museum is locked. Only the Vihara is accessible in the early morning slot. Plan to reach Sarnath by 9:30 AM. You need three hours minimum to cover the stupa, the ruins, and the museum without rushing. That puts you back in Varanasi by 1 PM, with the afternoon free for onward travel.Kushinagar, where the Buddha attained Parinirvana, is 250 kilometres northeast of Varanasi. By road, that is five to six hours depending on traffic through Gorakhpur. The overnight train from Varanasi to Gorakhpur (roughly four hours) followed by a taxi to Kushinagar is the more reliable option for those without a private vehicle.

• The Mahaparinirvana Temple, which houses the famous reclining Buddha statue, opens at 5 AM and closes at 8 PM. Entry is free.
• The Ramabhar Stupa, the cremation site, has no fixed closing time and is accessible through the day, but the grounds become poorly lit after sunset.
• The Kushinagar Museum opens at 10 AM and closes at 5 PM. It is closed on Mondays.

Most itineraries allocate half a day to Kushinagar. That is not enough. The site is spread across a walking radius of about two kilometres, and the Mahaparinirvana Temple draws large groups of international pilgrims, Japanese, Sri Lankan, Thai, and Tibetan Buddhist delegations are a near-constant presence, which means the inner sanctum can be crowded between 10 AM and 2 PM. Arrive by 8 AM, see the temple first, walk to Ramabhar Stupa before the midday heat, then return to the museum after lunch. Overnight stays in Kushinagar are possible; the Bihar State Tourism guesthouse and several monastery-run guesthouses offer clean, inexpensive rooms.Shravasti in Uttar Pradesh's Shravasti district is where the Buddha spent 24 rainy seasons, more time than at any other single location. The site contains the Jetavana monastery complex, donated to the Sangha by the merchant Anathapindika, and is the setting for a significant portion of the Pali Canon's discourses.

• The ASI-maintained Jetavana complex opens at 6 AM and closes at 6 PM. Entry is Rs 30 for Indian nationals.
• The Ananda Bodhi Tree, believed to be a cutting from the original tree under which the Buddha meditated at Shravasti, is within the complex and accessible during the same hours.
• Saheth and Maheth, the twin archaeological mounds that together constitute ancient Shravasti, require separate exploration. Maheth is the larger mound and covers the ancient city ruins.

Shravasti is 175 kilometres from Lucknow. Most travellers coming from Kushinagar approach via Gorakhpur and then head west, which adds distance but avoids backtracking. The drive from Kushinagar to Shravasti is approximately five hours. Shravasti town itself is small; accommodation options are limited to monastery guesthouses and a handful of budget hotels. Book ahead, especially between October and March, when the pilgrimage circuit sees its peak traffic.The circuit works best as a five-day structure:

• Day 1: Arrive Varanasi, evening at the ghats.
• Day 2: Sarnath (9 AM to 1 PM), afternoon departure toward Kushinagar by overnight train via Gorakhpur.
• Day 3: Full day at Kushinagar. Overnight in Kushinagar or Gorakhpur.
• Day 4: Drive from Kushinagar to Shravasti (five hours). Afternoon at Jetavana complex.
• Day 5: Morning at Saheth-Maheth ruins, afternoon departure to Lucknow or back to Varanasi.

Bihar's Bodh Gaya fits as a three-day extension either before this sequence (fly into Gaya, train to Varanasi) or after (Lucknow to Patna, then Gaya by road). Rajgir and Nalanda can be folded into the Bihar leg without significantly extending the trip. The Vaishali stupa, north of Patna, adds one more day if the Bihar circuit is being done comprehensively.
The circuit rewards travellers who treat it as a pilgrimage in the logistical sense: early starts, confirmed bookings, and realistic travel times on roads that are good in patches and poor in others. Every site on this route has a version of itself that opens before the crowds and a version that exists only in the noise of a midday rush. The difference between the two is almost always just the hour you choose to arrive.
