Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 November 2025 hoisted the sacred saffron flag atop the 191-foot spire of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, signalling the completion of a 535-year journey of faith, construction and contestation. The “Dhwajarohan” ceremony marks a symbolic closure of one chapter and opens a new phase of the temple’s role in India’s cultural narrative.
Ayodhya: In a moment that will be remembered in India’s spiritual and cultural history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday hoisted the sacred saffron flag atop the 191-foot ‘shikhara’ of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, marking the end of a 535-year-long struggle.
The historic ‘Dhwajarohan’ (flag hoisting) ceremony symbolizes the completion of the Ram Temple’s construction — a dream generations of devotees have long awaited. The event drew thousands of devotees and pilgrims from across India and abroad, transforming Ayodhya into a sea of saffron and devotion.
BJP leader Sanjay Jaiswal expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for fulfilling what he called a “dream of every Indian.”
“The struggle of 535 years comes to an end today with the consecration of the temple and flag hoisting. I present gratitude to the Prime Minister for fulfilling the dream of every Indian. We pray to Lord Ram that the country goes on to become Viksit Bharat by 2047,” Jaiswal said.
Prime Minister Modi, who also led the Bhoomi Pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for the Ram Temple on August 5, 2020, and later the Pran Pratishtha (consecration ceremony) on January 22, 2024, returned to Ayodhya to perform the final ceremonial act — hoisting the flag atop the grand temple.
Chairman of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Construction Committee, Nripendra Mishra, described the Dhwajarohan as more than just a ritual.
“This is not only a celebration but an announcement to devotees worldwide that the construction is complete. The Lord is now in His rightful place in the temple,” Mishra said, adding that Lord Ram, Sita Ji, Hanuman Ji, and His brothers now reside in the temple’s sanctum.
According to Mishra, the Aarti (ritual offering) of all deities took place immediately after the flag was hoisted, marking the spiritual completion of the grand project. The holy city of Ayodhya witnessed massive preparations for the occasion. Around 100 tons of flowers were used to decorate the temple premises and surrounding areas. Roads, ghats, and public spaces were illuminated, creating a festive, almost divine aura across the city.
Pilgrims lined up in long queues for darshan (holy viewing) of Lord Ram, while the sound of chants, bhajans, and temple bells filled the air. Security was tightened across Ayodhya, and arrangements were made for devotees arriving from all parts of the country.
