Viral Video Shows Woman Arguing With Police After Drinking Near Ganga
In the now-viral clip, the woman can be heard telling police that tourists are the reason local people earn money. She reportedly said that locals survive because of visitors and questioned why tourists were being stopped. At one point, she also claimed that she was drinking with her own money and that nobody had the right to interfere.
However, the police and locals present at the spot argued that drinking alcohol near the Ganga is not allowed in many parts of Rishikesh because of the religious and spiritual significance of the river. The Ganga is considered sacred by millions of people, and several areas around the ghats and riverbanks have restrictions on alcohol, non-vegetarian food, and certain activities seen as disrespectful to the place.
The incident has divided social media. Some users argued that rules should apply equally to everyone, whether local or tourist. Others felt that visitors should respect the traditions and culture of the places they travel to, especially when those places are considered holy. Many users also criticised the tone of the argument, saying that tourism does not give anyone the right to ignore local laws or hurt religious sentiments.
The controversy has also brought attention to a larger issue in places like Rishikesh and Varanasi, where locals have repeatedly raised concerns about tourists consuming alcohol, creating nuisance, or behaving in ways that clash with the spiritual identity of these cities. Just this week, another video from Varanasi showing people drinking beer on a boat in the Ganga also led to public outrage and police action.
While the viral video continues to circulate online, it has once again raised an important question: when people travel to places known for faith and tradition, should personal freedom come before local customs, or should respecting the place matter more?
