Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born on October 18, 1991, in Kampala, Uganda. He is the son of Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He grew up in Queens, New York, and became a naturalized US citizen in 2018.
He attended the Bronx High School of Science in New York City and later graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine with a bachelor’s degree in African Studies. His education influenced his political activism, especially on issues related to racial justice and housing rights.
Mamdani currently resides in Queens, New York. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, representing the 36th District, which includes Astoria in Queens. He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and the Working Families Party.
