Highlights

Brinjal also known as eggplant or aubergine, a vegetable rich in fibre, antioxidants and nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin K and potassium. But for a few groups of people this vegetable is an experience of allergic reactions, digestive issues or worsening of health. This is why nutritionists suggest these groups of people should avoid brinjal consumption for their better health. This article explores who they are and why.
Brinjal contains a compound known as solanine which is alkaloid in nature while these compounds are harmless, still for some individuals who have problems like allergies may experience inflammation or discomfort after eating them. According to studies people with eczema or dermatitis are more likely to react to solanine.
Brinjal is slightly acidic in nature and can enhance gastric acidity or indigestion among sensitive individuals. Experts say, the presence of high fibre might cause bloating and flatulence. People who are going through these issues should eat in moderation or avoid it altogether.
According to Ayurvedic experts presence of phytohormones in brinjal may stimulate menstruation-like effects when the vegetable is consumed in excess amounts during pregnancy. Which is why they advise limiting brinjal consumption becasue regular consumption may cause uterine contractions or hormonal imbalance in sensitive women.
People who have arthritis may experience inflammation in joints due to the presence of solanine in brinjal. Arthritis Foundation's research shows that nightshade vegetables like brinjal, tomatoes and potatoes may trigger pain in some individuals. So if you have rheumatoid arthritis then try removing brinjal from your regular diet for a few weeks and observe if you feel any difference.
It is true that brinjal is low in carbs but its glycoalkaloid can interfere with blood sugar regulation when the vegetable is consumed excessively. After consuming brinjal in large quantity some diabetic patients experience fluctuations in sugar levels.
