Donald Trump's Tariff Tread on Indian Rice

Indian Basmati rice, known for its unmatched aroma, fluffiness and long grains, is facing global attention as U.S. President Donald Trump hints at potential tariffs on Indian rice imports. Despite trade concerns, experts confirm that Basmati remains irreplaceable due to India’s unique Himalayan climate and soil conditions. Beyond its export value, Basmati rice offers significant health benefits from a lower glycemic index suitable for diabetics to improved digestion, better heart health, and essential nutrients that support weight management.

In rice, what's your favourite variant? For the majority of people, it's Basmati because of its top aromatic and fluffy nature. India is the largest producer and exporter of Basmati rice which accounts for 70% of the global market.

Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump on December 8, 2025, hinted that he might impose tariffs on Indian rice. While speaking at the White House, Trump expressed his interest in introducing new tariffs on agricultural imports, especially on Indian rice and Canada's fertilisers.

As of today, the demand of basmati rice continues to grow as this variant is famous for dishes like biyani, which is consumed extensively in the Gulf region and South Asia.

The Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) told ANI, "While the US is an important destination, India's rice exports are well-diversified across global markets. The Federation, in close coordination with the Government of India, continues to deepen existing trade partnerships and open new markets for Indian rice.”

The US cannot substitute Indian basmati as India's climate and soil conditions are unique in the Himalayas, ideal for growing high-quality aromatic rice. The US variety of rice misses the aroma flavour, texture and elongation of the rice.
