For a very long time bowel cancer has been considered a disease that mostly affected people over 50’s. Routine screenings, awareness campaigns, and lifestyle advice were all targeted toward older adults. But in recent years, doctors across the world have noticed something unsettling, more young adults are being diagnosed with bowel cancer than ever before. This shift has left many people in their 20s and 30s asking the same question: why is this happening?

Bowel cancer often called colorectal cancer affects the large intestine and rectum. For years, most people believed it was something that only older adults had to worry about. Highly processed foods, low fiber intake, sugary drinks, and red or processed meats have become common in daily diets. Long working hours and screen-heavy routines mean less physical activity. Obesity rates have also increased globally, and excess body weight is a known risk factor for bowel cancer. Stress related problems and lack of sleep is also affecting gut health and inflammation levels in the body.

Consuming alcohol should be restricted, people should check their weight once in a week and take short breaks while working, a simple walk can make big changes as well. If something feels off and doesn’t improve for weeks, talk to a doctor. If you catch a problem early it will be better to cure it immediately. This rise in bowel cancer among young people isn’t meant to scare you. It’s a reminder to take your health seriously, make better daily choices, and listen when your body tries to tell you something.
