Google has begun rolling out a long-awaited feature that allows users to change their Gmail username without creating a new Google account. Available in phases, the update applies to accounts ending with @gmail.com and lets users choose a new email address while keeping their existing profile, data and subscriptions intact.

As a Gmail user, you may also hated of living with an old email ID forever. Google wants to finally address this long-standing problem. Now, a feature is being rolled out by the company that is going to allow people to change their existing Gmail username while keeping the same prior Google account.

Those who are using an email that ends with @gamil.com, this update applies to those accounts only. This will allow the user to choose a new Gmail username without opening a new account. Google is going to keep the same account profile, along with access to its other services like Photos, Drive, Play Store and YouTube.

Google support page's report says that a user can even replace their current @gamil.com address with another one from the same domain. Note that, these changes are not going to affect users' account history, purchases or subscriptions.

The Process

Google is rolling out this feature in phases. Users can check availability by going to their Google account settings, selecting Personal info or by tapping Email. If the option is visible then the account is eligible for the change.

After switching, emails sent to either Gmail address will be delivered to the same inbox. The old email address will be retained as a recovery email and users will be able to sign in using either address.

To prevent misuse, Google has also set a few clear restrictions on this feature. Once a Gmail username is changed, users must wait 12 months before making another change. And during this time, they can still revert to their original email address if required. However, the old Gmail username cannot be used to create a new Google account during this period, as it remains associated with the existing account.

It may happen that some older google's services like past Calendar events, may still show the old address for a while. Still, the old email is going to remains by the user and others cannot claim the same address.
