Brain age is a kind of snapshot of an individual's overall brain health so it refers to how old a person's brain appears on scans not how old a person is. A younger brain age means the brain has healthier neural networks. Older-looking brains mean they are prone to cognitive decline increasing the risk of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

The study was conducted around 128 adults in midlife and older age. Many are living with chronic musculoskeletal pain or are at risk of knee osteoarthritis. The MRI scans taken over two years where machine learning used to analyse brain structure. The approach is important because it looks at the whole brain not isolated areas and captures the combined effects of pain, stress and lifestyle.

The study observed that people linked to older appearing brains are going through chronic pain or long-term stress or lower income or social isolation.

Protective Habits That Keep the Brain Young

The study highlighted key habits that added protection and additive benefits to the brain such as quality time, which allows the brain to repair and reset. Optimism helps an individual to manage stress and cope. If an individual has strong social connections, that also protects against cognitive decline. Non-smokers or those who avoid tobacco, it prevents accelerated neural ageing.
