Highlight of the story: A wife is not just a life partner she is the witness of your every up and down, the goddess of your home, and your other half in dharma. But did you know that according to the Garuda Purana, how a man treats his wife decides whether he attains heaven or suffers in hell after death? This article focuses on the five deadly sins that lead a husband to horrific punishment if committed against his wife. It’s a deep reflection of moral duties and self-realization for every husband.
Among Hindu scriptures, the Garuda Purana holds a unique place. It not only explains the state after death but also the consequences of one’s karma. Especially in the context of husband-wife relations, it lays down moral laws that govern both life and afterlife. In this article, we explore five actions that, if done by a husband to his wife, bring intense suffering both in this world and beyond.
Chapter 7 of the Garuda Purana describes that if a man constantly causes mental stress or physically abuses his wife, he is sent to "Raurava Naraka."Raurava Naraka is inhabited by venomous serpents called Ruru that continuously bite the soul. This doesn’t only refer to physical violence mental torture such as neglect, humiliation, verbal abuse, constant criticism, and emotional blackmail also count.
Manusmriti also confirms that men who harm their wives suffer in their next birth with poor health, poverty, and sorrow. A noble man is one who stays emotionally sensitive and balanced toward his wife.
According to Garuda Purana, a man who maintains emotional or physical relations with another woman while being married is sent to Kumbhipaka Naraka. This is one of the most horrifying hells where Yamdoots (messengers of death) boil the soul in hot oil repeatedly.
"यस्तु भार्यां परित्यज्य परस्त्रिषु रमते नरः। स कुंभिनिपाके गोरे पच्यते कालसंत्यये॥"
Modern culture may label extramarital affairs as “freedom” or “exploration,” but scriptures define it as one of the most disgraceful sins. It damages not just trust but spiritual and emotional purity.
As per Anushasana Parva from Mahabharata and Manusmriti, a husband who insults his wife faces destruction in this life and suffering in the next. Insulting includes ignoring her opinion, mocking her choices, ridiculing her in public, and treating her contributions as inferior.
In Hindu dharma, the wife is considered a goddess. Insulting her leads to loss of peace, prosperity, and divine grace.
A wife’s strength lies in her emotional bond. If a husband mocks her feelings, avoids her pain, or calls her emotions “drama,” it is emotional abuse.
Such behavior leads to a spiritual downfall and causes chaos over several lifetimes.
If a wife is hurt and the husband laughs it off or calls her “too sensitive,” this is emotional neglect. Garuda Purana refers to such conduct as “arrogant husbandhood” or "Ahankari Patitva."
When a husband deprives his wife of her basic rights such as love, respect, freedom, or decision-making authority — it is not just morally wrong but a spiritual sin.
Such men are destined to suffer in poverty and sorrow for multiple lifetimes and are reborn in lower life forms.
Homes where women are disrespected face endless conflict, financial instability, and emotional disconnect.
According to Garuda Purana, the husband-wife relationship is not just a social bond but a spiritual contract. If a husband wrongs his wife be it physically, mentally, or emotionally he corrupts both his present life and afterlife.
A righteous husband respects his wife, listens to her, protects her dignity, and walks beside her as an equal. Such men attain Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha the four pillars of life.
For it is said the first proof of a man's righteousness is reflected not in scriptures or sermons, but in the smile on his wife's face.
