3 Gita Verses That Reveal Lord Krishna’s Meditation Technique
In Bhagavad Gita’s sixth chapter named Dhyan Yoga, Lord Krishna provides powerful pieces of advice on meditation. As a matter of fact, if we start engaging in meditation as recommended by Bhagwan, we can purify our minds from the depth, reaching closer to the ultimate goal of liberation from the eternal cycle of life and death. In this article, we will explore 3 important verses from Dhyan Yoga that points out Lord Krishna’s meditation technique.
1. Lord Krishna About the Ultimate Aim of Yoga
“In that joyous state of Yoga, called samadhi, one experiences supreme boundless divine bliss, and thus situated, one never deviates from the Eternal Truth.”
In the ancient, authoritative Indian text on yoga named Shiva Samhita, it is written that yoga is divided into 8 limps or aspects namely Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. A key truth that we must realise is that all these aspects are ultimately aimed at Samadhi or Moksha. In fact, dhyana or meditation is one of the most important step that we should take in order to reach Samadhi.
2. Lord Krishna’s Definition of Meditation
“Seated firmly on it, the yogi should strive to purify the mind by focusing it in meditation with one pointed concentration, controlling all thoughts and activities. He must hold the body, neck, and head firmly in a straight line, and gaze at the tip of the nose, without allowing the eyes to wander.”
The key element that we should note in this verse is how Bhagwan described “meditation with one pointed concentration.” In the same chapter, the Lord tells us what happens when the mind remain steady with “single pointed concentration” in this way: “When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a lamp in a windless place.”
So, we can sit up straight in a comfortable position. Take some deep breaths. Then, we can start meditating by focusing the mind on a single thought. Still wondering how to do this? Lord Krishna has provided the answer to this question as well.
3. Gita About Meditating on the Supreme
“Whenever and wherever the restless and unsteady mind wanders, one should bring it back and continually focus it on God.”
One of the best ways to meditate is to focus on the Lord himself. We can keep an image of Lord Krishna or the deity that we worship in front of us. After observing the image for sometime, we can close our eyes and maintain it in our minds. As Bhagwan says, whenever we find that the mind wanders on the wings of random thoughts and emotions, we can become aware and calmly bring it back to the God. This meditation technique is said to be very powerful not just in purifying our minds, but also in receiving the blessings of the God that we are worshipping.
