On Sheetala Saptami devotees will prepare food that will be offered to the Goddess on Sheetala Ashtami.

Sheetala Ashtami is an important religious festival that is widely observed throughout North India. Particularly the devotees all over Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan engage in traditional rituals and pray to Goddess Sheetala on this day. The festival is also called Basoda in Hindu tradition. This is the day in which believers will pray to Sheetala Devi in order to attain protection from diseases such as chicken pox, smallpox and measles. Religious communities throughout North Indian states will be visiting temples and will be engaging in family rituals and prayers during this auspicious festival.

The strong faith is that Sheetala Devi symbolises healing and cooling energy. In fact, the name “Sheetala” itself can be translated as the one who soothes or cools. Therefore, the Goddess is worshipped as the representation of relief from diseases and fever.

The most important custom that is followed on Sheetala Ashtami or Basoda is the tradition of not cooking on the ceremonial day. The cooking ritual will be carried out on the previous day i.e., on Sheetala Saptami and the same food will be consumed on Sheetala Ashtami.

Throughout generations devotees have been following this custom of eating pre-cooked or stale food which is also called Basoda. Indeed, the food will be offered to the Goddess first, before the devotees begin to eat. Mostly traditional dishes will be prepared for this festival such as poori, sweets and other food items that are made at home.
