In chapter 4, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna:




“Actions do not cling to me because I am not attached to their results. Those who understand this and practice it live in freedom.”




Karma Yoga lies at the heart of Gita as one of its core tenets. Throughout the text, we can see Lord Krishna reminding Arjuna about the pressure that the constant worrying about outcomes creates in the human mind. In Bhagwan’s own words: “You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.”



Why Attachment to Outcomes Leads to Sorrow

According to Lord Krishna, craving, aversions, and the attachments that are formed as a result of them, are elements that keeps us trapped in the eternal cycle of life and death. We fall deeply into the fire of desires, each and every moment we contemplate about them. What happens when we don’t get that we desire? Grief follows. On the other hand, if we do get what we crave, it will only result in the heightening of these desires which are going to prick our mental peace even more. Bhagwan told Arjuna in chapter 2:



"O son of Kunti, the contact between the senses and their objects gives rise to fleeting perceptions of happiness and distress. These are non-permanent, and come and go like the winter and summer seasons.”



Steps From Bhagavad Gita Gita For Liberation


Along with engaging in Karma Yoga, we should implement the Gita principle of ‘Surrender to Supreme’ in our lives as well. Whatever that you do, say and think can all be dedicated to Lord Krishna or the Supreme. Consider all of them as your offerings to Bhagwan.



Develop a daily habit of meditation. This is the best technique that humanity has invented in order to attain mastery over the mind.



We should lead a sattvic life. Whether it is work, eat or sleep; do everything in moderation.



Engage in seva. Do it with a selfless attitude. Develop empathy and see the divine essence that is active within every living being.
