Christopher Nolan has unveiled the first trailer for his epic adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, offering a striking glimpse into a grounded, IMAX-shot reimagining of the ancient myth. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope and Tom Holland as Telemachus, the film focuses on the emotional and psychological cost of war rather than fantasy spectacle.
Highlights
  • First trailer of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey released online
  • Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero
  • Anne Hathaway appears as Penelope, with Tom Holland playing Telemachus
  • One of the largest-scale IMAX productions ever attempted
  • The film releases in July 2026 across Australia, the UK and the US
Christopher Nolan's new epic adaptation of Homer's Odyssey first trailer has been released online. Matt Damon acts as the classic Greek hero. With a series of shots and grave voiceove the trailer started, "After years of war... no one could stand between my men... and home.. not even me."

In the trailer, we can see brief glimpses of Anne Hathaway as Odysseus's wife Penelope and Telemachus, his son, played by Tom Holland (actor of Spiderman), as Odysseus battles storms and other obstacles on his way back to Ithaca.

The newly released trailer arrives shortly after a six-minute sequence was screened in cinemas on 12 December. Earlier, a cinema trailer had debuted in July but was leaked online. This latest trailer appears markedly different and follows Christopher Nolan’s revelation that he used nearly 2 million feet of IMAX film to make the movie. The Odyssey is scheduled for release on 16 July 2026 in Australia and on 17 July 2026 in the UK and the US.

Nolan’s Distinctive Take on Mythology

Even when dealing with mythological material, Christopher Nolan's trailer suggests his signature grounded realism rather than leaning into fantasy or heavy imagery.

The emphasise we receive from its visuals are kind of isolation, scale and endurance rather than supernatural elements. The tone is meditative, exploring leadership, guilt, survival with psychological toll of war.

It seems Nolan appears focused on the human cost of epic journeys not just their heroics.

What sets The Odyssey apart technically is Nolan's commitment for large-format filmmaking. Nolan revealed that he used nearly 2 million feet of IMAX film and the film was shot extensively using IMAX cameras. So this mars one of the largest-scale IMAX productions ever attempted.

Beyond the main roles played by top actors like Damon, Hathaway or Holland, the film reportedly features a pool of cast drawn from Nolan's frequent collaborators and new additions. While, as of now, not all roles have been officially detailed. So expectations are high for powerful performances that bring ancient characters into emotional modernity.
