India is set to enter the era of high-speed rail with the launch of its first bullet train on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). Scheduled to launch on August 15, 2027, the project will initially operate on a 100-km stretch between Surat and Vapi, before becoming fully operational by 2029. Designed specifically for Japanese Shinkansen technology, the corridor will feature world-class engineering, including long underground tunnels and an undersea section beneath Thane Creek.
Indian Railways, with a vision to transform its travel, now set to introduce its first high-speed bullet train from the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor (MAHSR). Ministry of Railways and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently updated that the official launch date of the train is August 15, 2027. According to the official announcement, the first bullet train service will run on a 100-km stretch between Surat and Vapi.

India's inaugural bullet train project comes with years of planning, construction and engineering endeavours. According to official statements, the project has been designed specifically for Japanese Shinkansen trains, ensuring full technological compatibility and reliability.

Travel From Mumbai To Ahmedabad Under Three Hours

The Indian bullet train is going to be among the most ambitious railway endeavours. It will connect the financial capital Mumbai in Maharashtra and the economic powerhouse, Ahmedabad in Gujarat, in under three hours, stretching over 508 kilometres. Designed to meet international high-speed rail standards, the train will pass through multiple tunnels, including a 21-kilometre underground stretch. It will also feature a 7-kilometre undersea section beneath Thane Creek, making it a remarkable civil engineering feat.

India's bullet train corridor is developing with the collaboration with Japan. Initial services will operate using Shinkansen E5 series trains, capable of running at very high speeds. The bullet trains on this corridor will have an operational speed of up to 320 km/h, reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to under three hours, compared to the current 7–8 hour rail journey.

The corridor will have 12 stations in total. In Maharashtra, stations will be located at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Thane, Virar and Boisar. In Gujarat, stations will include Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati. According to official statements, bullet trains are expected to operate every 15–20 minutes and are likely to boost regional economies by significantly reducing travel time.

This project becomes a significant landmark that represents a major upgrade in the country's railway infrastructure with a touch of international technology with domestic execution. With the official launch scheduled for August 2027 and full operations expected by 2029, the project promises to transform intercity travel while driving economic growth.
