As the digital world becomes increasingly noisy, concerns about notification anxiety and emotional overload are growing. Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, has openly shared his dislike for smartphones and his deliberate distance from constant connectivity. Durov explained why he avoids mobile phones, citing loss of focus, emotional manipulation, reduced productivity and the erosion of independent thinking.
The world tapped into the digital net is cumulatively witnessing the rise of phonophobia. Hearing the popping notification for some became a pinch that surged anxiety. Pavel Durov, founder and CEO of Telegram, a popular messaging platform used by over 1 billion people across the globe, publicly spoke about his relationship with mobile phones. In a recent interview with Lex Friendman Podcast, he stated his hate for the digital device and how he stays away from it. Durov is known for his stoic mindset, aesthetic life and discipline. This article sheds light on five reasons why Pavel Durov don't like to use a mobile phone.
Growing up, Pavel Durov didn't have a mobile phone. When he finally got to use a mobile phone, he didn't even use it for a few phone calls and always put his device in mute or aeroplane mode. He hated his calmness being disturbed. In his own word he states, Phone is a device that is not necessary.
In the Lex Fridman podcast, he said, "The entire world can be fascinated by a fight between the world's richest man (Elon Musk) and the world's most powerful man (Donald Trump). But for the vast majority of the people, following this saga is irrelevant. It won't change their lives." He continues, "Ofcourse there are people who are engaged in activities that require them to be up to date with everything that's going on, but 99% of people aren't."
It is very important for everyone to dictate what is important in their lives and set up their own agenda. With endless notifications and reminders smartphone often distract people from their goal. It lets other people's choices become your choice, it let other's fear become your fear. In the podcast, Durov said, "I don't want other people or companies telling me what is important today and what I should be thinking about."
There should be time to think about what's really important to you or what you want to change in this world. For Durov, beautiful ideas can come to you while you're doing your morning exercise or doing your morning routine, without a phone. He said, " If you open your phone first thing in the morning, what you end up being is a creature that is told to think about the rest of the day."
Though Pavel Durov founded one of the largest social networks in the world, VK (VKontakte) and after that, he founded the second largest messaging app in the world (Telegram) but according to his own words, "The more connected and accessible you are (In the digital world), the less productive you become"
Conversing with Fridman in the podcast, he highlights how threatening a digital device can become in terms of playing with emotions. He said, "They are trying to influence your emotions. You can be forced to get into trouble, because you can be forced to make conclusions that are not in your best interest."
