Most of us go through a situation in life when we feel lost about our purpose, our values and our deepest responsibilities. Doubts and confusions are bound to occur. They are all part of human existence. Arjuna himself became stuck, feeling lost about his own purpose as a warrior during the Mahabharata war. So, this phase that you may be going through; its utterly human, normal and many a time, inevitable. However, the powerful words of Godly wisdom that came out from Lord Krishna’s mind saved Arjuna from inaction. It helped him fight and fulfil his purpose as a warrior. Let’s learn some of the most important lessons that Bhagwan Krishna gifted Arjuna so as to reorient himself towards him mission in life, thereby becoming successful.
In chapter 2 of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says:
”When a man thinks of the objects, attachment to them arises; from attachment desire is born; from desire anger arises. From anger comes delusion; from delusion the loss of memory; from loss of memory the destruction of discrimination; from the destruction of discrimination he perishes."
Most of the problems in our life arises because we are attached to the wrong matters. Some of us are attached to certain food items, some others are addicted to social media, video games or even to a particular individual. These deep attachments shut down the logical thinking part or the prefrontal cortex of their brains. As a result, they will start losing focus from their purpose in life.
Instead what we should do is, follow a sattvic lifestyle, eat sattvic foods, meditate, exercise and purify our hearts through prayers and other observances like fasting. When our minds become as a calm as a serene lake, our purpose will naturally manifest in front of us. We may get messages in the form of a job letter, a call from someone or even in the form of a book. The key is to become freed from attachments and focus our minds on the Supreme. When the spiritual aspect of your life becomes pure, material goals will start becoming fulfilled naturally.
Lord Krishna provided Arjuna an extremely powerful and life-affirming message when he said:
“Whatever happened, happened for the good. Whatever is happening, is happening for the good. Whatever will happen, will also happen for the good.”
This is the mindset that we should adopt if we want to grow through phases of confusion and doubts. The key is to direct your focus towards the Supreme; the ultimate truth of existence i.e., Brahman.
In simple words, dedicate your actions or deeds on the foot of Lord Krishna. Consider your karma as your service to the Lord. Each step that you are taking in life should be wholeheartedly dedicated to Him. As you keep moving in this direction, you will start experiencing that you are becoming more and more selfless. The attachments, cravings and aversions will start dying. You will achieve greater clarity, focus and strength to take on any challenges and solve dilemmas that life throws at you.
Sree Krishna defined Karma yoga in a few words, when he said: “You have a right to perform your prescribed duties but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.”
Many of us perform deeds solely to enjoy the positive outcomes. However, to achieve true freedom and succeed in the ultimate journey towards God, we have to let go of our attachments to results. Our only duty is to do what we are here to do. If you see a homeless old man suffering in cold, buy a blanket for him. But not with a mind that is expecting anything in return. Help an unknown child who has lost his or her way. However, do it without expecting any positive outcomes for the same.
When you continue performing actions in this way, you will start experiencing a profound sense of harmony and peace filling your soul. This single habit in itself will provide you great clarity and fulfilment. Confusions will disappear. New paths of opportunities will open up. Then, slowly but surely, you will reach the ultimate state of liberation where you experience God’s divine energy within your own soul.
