Bhagavad Gita is a sacred text that can gift solace to any struggling soul in this world. For thousands of years, people have been reading Gita to create balance and harmony in their lives, thereby opening the doorway towards Moksha. In fact, Arjuna himself fulfilled his purpose in life by internalising the profound truths contained in Lord Krishna’s words. In this article, we will explore one of the most powerful verse in Bhagavad Gita for attaining intense discipline and focus in this world of distractions.
In chapter 2, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna:
व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन।
बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम्॥
Vyavasāyātmikā buddhir ekeha kuru-nandana
Bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca buddhayo ’vyavasāyinām
“Those who are resolute have a single-pointed intellect, O Arjuna. The thoughts of the irresolute are many-branched and endless.”
Arjuna lost focus from his duty as a Kshatriya when he saw his own family members in the battlefield. Overthinking crowded his brain and he became disoriented. Here we can see that Lord Krishna is reminding him about the basic difference between a truly focused individual whose success is as clear as a daylight and an unfocused person who has no control over his life. A basic fact that differentiates the two is the quality of “single-pointed intellect.” Lets explore this concept deeply.
The key idea of this verse is “single-pointed intellect.” Buddhi, according to Gita, is the faculty of discernment. This world is filled with endless options for distractions. An individual who fails to fulfil his duty in life with be flowing along with these mindless distractions. He or she might be focused on gossips, other people’s opinions or even in following sensual distractions.
However, a truly focused individual will be moving in a straight line like a shooting star. His mind will be filled with the thoughts that are related to his purpose. He knows that allowing the growth of even a single distracting thought can result in its multiplication.
Meditation is one of the most powerful tool that we can use to sharpen our minds. Wake up everyday during Brahma Muhurta and meditate for half-an-hour to one hour. You can keep an image of Lord Krishna in front of you and maintain his image in your mind throughout the meditation. Otherwise, you can engage in mindfulness meditation too by focusing on your breath coming and going out through your nostrils.
Engage in hatha yoga. Learn some yogic asanas and pranayams. These techniques will create harmony of body and mind.
Create balance in everything you food. Whether its food or sleep or work. Don’t go to the extremes.
Then, fill your mind with the thoughts that are related to your purpose in life. Never worry about the outcomes. Dedicate yourself entirely to fulfilling your duties. Consider your actions as your offerings to God. Everything else will be taken care of by Bhagwan.
