The Story of Mohini Ekadashi

According to the legend from ancient Hindu texts, during the churning of ocean a pot filled with nectar emerged as a result of the combined effort of demons and gods. When this happened, the demons ran off with the nectar or Amrita in order to attain immortality and power over the gods. However, Bhagwan Vishnu incarnated as Mohini, a beautiful woman. Using her immense intelligence and beauty, the Lord captivated the demons. During this period, she cleverly took over the nectar and distributed it among gods. In short, it was Lord Vishnu’s Mohini incarnation that reinstated Dharma in the universe by protecting the gods, providing them Amrita.
