Ram Navami is the day Lord Ram came down to earth, particularly in this palace of King Dasharatha and in the city of Ayodhya. Scriptures show that this was the time period in which humanity was deeply immersed in the clutches of demonic forces, injustice and tyranny. Hence, the gods prayed to Bhagwan Vishnu to save earth.
As a result of His deep kindness towards the suffering masses, Lord Vishnu came down to earth as Shri Ram in order to carry out the restoration of Dharma. Therefore, devotees believe that Lord Rama represent the light within the Self. When we pray and engage in puja vidhi with a sincere heart during this period, divine consciousness can awaken within our hearts, perfecting our souls with noble qualities such as righteousness, immense courage and absolute truthfulness.
Valmiki wrote in Ramayana that the King of Ayodhya, Dasharatha, did not have children. Thus, under the guidance of Maharishi Vashishtha, the Raja Guru, Dasharatha carried out Putrakameshti Yajna.
As the Yajna concluded, a sacred bowl filled with kheer came out of the divine fire. The King equally distributed this kheer, which was considered as a divine offering, to his 3 queens namely Kaikeyi, Sumitra and Kaushalya. This led to the birth of 4 great offsprings i.e., Lord Shri Ram. Lakshman, Shatrughna and Bharat.
Devotees are highly recommended to wake up during Brahma Muhurta on Ram Navami. After taking a holy bath, we have to wear fresh and clean clothes. Scriptures say that it is highly auspicious to offer rice grains, vermillion and water to the Sun God using a copper vessel in the morning of Ram Navami.
Then, we have to install the idols of Bhagwan Ram, Lakshman, Sita Devi and Lord Hanuman on a wooden platform.
Thirdly, we can invoke the deities by bathing the idols with the holy water of Ganga and by offering yellow flowers, ornaments, clothes and sandalwood paste.
Offerings should be given in the form of saffron rice, kheer, panjiri, tulsi and sweets as well.
Religious leaders point out that reciting Ramayana, Rama Taraka Mantra or Ramcharitmanas is very important for attaining the divine grace of the Lord. By the end, Aarti should be performed using incense, camphor and a lamp.
