Lord Hanuman is one of the most powerful Gods in Hinduism. Being an avatar of the supreme Lord, Maha Dev, and as one of the most dedicated devotee of Bhagwan Rama, Hanuman Jhi represents boundless strength, selfless service and courage. Furthermore, as Lord Bajrangbali is a Chiranjivi, it is believed that whenever a devotee prays to the God with a sincere and faithful heart, divine protection will manifest in his or her life instantly. In this article, we will explore the divine story that resulted in the tradition of celebrating Hanuman Jhi’s birth twice a year.
First of all, we should note that it is the first Hanuman Jayanti in an year that marks the birth anniversary of the Lord. The second Hanuman Jayanti is observed as Vijay Abhinandan Mahotsav. Sacred texts of Hinduism points out that Sankatmochan Hanuman Jhi was born on Krishna Paksha’s Chaturdashi Tithi i.e., on a Tuesday during the Mesha Lagna of Kartik month.
The second Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Chaitra.
The origin of the second Hanuman Jayanti is associated with a divine story of Hindu tradition. The legend tells us that Lord Bajrangbali had unique powers and strengths from his childhood itself. Once when Hanuman Jhi felt hungry, as a child, he misunderstood the sun for a fruit and tried to eat it. As a result, the Lord decided to swallow the sun by jumping towards it. However, this created darkness throughout earth.
When Lord Indra got to know about this, he used his Vajra to strike down Lord Anjaneya. The power of the strike left Hanuman Jhi unconscious. Realising this, Lord Vayu or the Wind God became very angry and thwarted the flow of air throughout the universe, resulting in chaos in the human world.
At this point, Lord Brahma intervened in order to quieten the rage of Vayu Dev, thereby reviving Hanuman Jhi. The belief goes that Vayuputra received a new life on Chaitra month’s full moon day. The is the reason why Hanuman Jayanti is also celebrated on this day each year.
As per Hindu religious calendar, the tithi (full moon) of Chaitra Shukla Paksha started at 7:06 am (1st April 2026). It will conclude at 7:41 am (2nd April 2026). Therefore, Hanuman Janmotsav will be observed on the 2nd of April 2026.
