The fast happens during Chaturthi Tithi starting October 9 at 10:54 pm and ending October 10 at 7:38 pm. The moon rises at 8:13 pm. Women watch for it to appear then offer water to the moon before breaking their fast.

Fasting starts at 6:19 am and runs until moonrise. The puja mahurat will start between 5:57 pm and 7:11 pm. All the Women gather during this time to pray and light clay lamps filled with oil and listen to the vrat katha (the story behind the festival). The ritual wraps up when the moon appears. They offer arghya (water in a brass vessel), then look at their husband's face through a metal sieve before taking their first sip of water and bite of food.

Before sunrise breaks, women eat sargi (a pre-dawn meal their mother in law prepares with fruits, nuts, sweets and fried bread). They dress in bright red or pink suits. Glass bangles cover their arms. Mehendi stains their palms dark orange from designs applied the night before. Many touch neither food nor water all day. Evening brings families to courtyards or rooftops to pray and wait together.
